T.E.A.C.H. Early Childhood® Project, now in its second decade, is
flourishing throughout the ·
T.E.A.C.H. (Teacher
Education and Compensation Helps) offers an effective strategy for addressing
the education, compensation and retention of the early childhood workforce
across the country. The T.E.A.C.H.
Early Childhood® Project is also building the
capacity of educational institutions.
As a purchaser of college education credits for thousands of early
childhood professionals across the county, T.E.A.C.H. has played a significant
role in increasing the demand for early childhood college level
coursework. T.E.A.C.H. states have
reported that the scholarship program helped create more relevant coursework
and has been a catalyst for a more flexible and responsive higher education
system, which now offers a wider variety of coursework, as well as,
non-traditional hours, distance learning, satellite locations and accelerated
degree programs. |

The T.E.A.C.H. Early
Childhood® Project provides
comprehensive scholarships for teachers employed at regulated child care
facilities to take courses toward the South Carolina Early Childhood
Credential, a Certificate, a Diploma, or an Associate Degree in Early
Childhood Education. The Project is an

The T.E.A.C.H. Early
Childhood® Project is a partnership
that involves the teacher, the child care program employing the teachers and
the South Carolina Office of First Steps. The scholarships provide assistance
with tuition and books, a travel stipend, paid release time, compensation,
and counseling services. |

Eligibility Criteria: |

To be eligible for any
T.E.A.C.H. Early Childhood®
scholarship, an applicant must work a minimum number of hours per week in a
child care program licensed or registered with the South Carolina Department
of Social Services. Employees of licensure-exempt programs are also
eligible. An applicant must have the
sponsorship of their employing child care program. The South Carolina Early Childhood
Credential scholarships require applicants to be working a minimum of twenty
hours per week in their sponsoring child care program. All other scholarships require an applicant
to work a minimum of thirty hours per week.
Teacher and family child care provider applicants must earn less than
$14.45 per hour and directors or director/owners must earn less than $15.00
per hour; however, partial scholarships may be available for providers
earning just over the maximum. Each scholarship has additional eligibility
criteria specific to the scholarship model. |
